SweetLeafJacqui’s ACL Picks!!

By Danny on Sep 13     Filed In ACL     Add a Comment

ACL is here again!!!!  And I cannot wait to see Ray LaMontange.

While I am a fan of his music, the number one reason I want to see Ray LaMontagne is so that I can stop getting him confused with Tracy Chapman.

As a fan of Fast Car and Give Me One Reason, it has taken me quite a while to realize this dude is, well, a dude.  After swaying barefooted to Jolene in the plush Zilker grass, I am confident I will finally be able to distinguish between these two soul-filled artists.

Other shows I’m psyched to see are The Head and the Heart, Gomez, and Foster the People (they killed it at Lolla)!

Have fun out there and stay hydrated!!! -@sweetleafjacqui

I am SO excited about Lolla this year, which makes it extremely hard to pick just one person or band to list as my top pick.  I am stoked to see Eminem, Cee Lo, Foster the People, Local Natives, Bright Eyes, and the Arctic Monkeys to name a few.  But my number one pick for y’all to see is hands down Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses.  Yes, I know I just went from Eminem to Ryan Bingham.  To say I like a wide variety of music may be an understatement.   But this Oscar winning

“Weary Kind” singer has much more to give than just one gritty song.  Ryan Bingham and The Dead Horses jam on stage one great song after another.  For those not familiar with Texas country, I cannot recommend a better act to get you hooked.  And as an added bonus, Ryan himself is quite the looker. It doesn’t hurt that I am a sucker for the harmonica and guitar players.  For Ryan’s own safety, I hope I do not get close to him back stage because I will lick his face.

On that note, on to festival surviving tips.  If you’re in for the long haul or just a day, it always helps to have a blanket.  I recently purchased the JJ Cole Essentials Blanket from Target because of its convenience.  It’s light, easy to carry, and built for the outdoors which makes it perfect for festival season.

My other survival tip is ice cold Mint & Honey green tea.  My favorite teas are Peach and Original, however, during a hot festival day, there is nothing better than an ice cold Mint & Honey.  It gives you the perfect boost in between sets.

I look forward to seeing you out there and for more bands to check out for Lolla, follow  me on Twitter @SweetLeafJacqui!

5 Things I Learned at the NKOTB & BSB Concert

NKOTB Puffy Paint Shirt!

  1. Puffy paint never goes out of style.  Apparently, we were the only girls in the crowd who got the memo.  However, just our appearance made people breakout into song (shout out to our waiter at Luke) and it was totally worth it.
  2. You’re never too old to do the leg swing.  Yes, the New Kids rocked it on stage.  And anyone who thinks they invented the “brush your shoulders off” move needs a music video education. http://youtu.be/tbIEwIwYz-c
  3. Basketball stadiums were not built to be packed with screaming girls.  If basketball players think it’s hard to hear the whistle blow during a playoff game, they need to sit in a packed stadium of girls and just have Donnie Walberg take off his shirt (insert high pitch scream here). My ears are still ringing! BSB sings “Larger Than Life (insert extra high pitch scream).  Nick Carter takes a swig out of an Ozarka water bottle (more screams while 1000 girls lunge for the trash he just chucked into the crowd).  That being said, I did wake up a little hoarse Wednesday morning.
  4. It only takes two notes for all of the words to come back to you.  During many Backstreet Boy songs, I was singing along and I had no idea I even knew the song.  Ahh the power of boy bands. http://youtu.be/4fndeDfaWCg How I do miss you so.
  5. 8 girl friends + $43 cheap seats & $5 homemade shirts = Greatest Tuesday Night Ever.  There is nothing better than having a great time singing, dancing, and laughing with good friends.  Add in the Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block and I’m pretty sure it doesn’t get better than that.

Music Monday 90′s Style!

BAM! NKOTB!!!

So, tomorrow is a BIG day!  I get to live out one of my childhood dreams and see New Kids on the Block, also known as NKOTB to us cool kids, live in concert.  As a special bonus, Donnie, Danny, Jordan, Jonathon, and Joey will be joined by the lovely and talented Backstreet Boys.  (Thank goodness N’sync wasn’t included because I would have hyperventilated.)

In preparation for our girls night out concert trip, I started putting together a little playlist of other songs from  bands during that era.   I had to start with the first CD that I ever owned.   Ace of Base, which quickly led me to Wilson Phillips “Hold On”.   And then I also had to include my favorite music video of all time, Paula Abdul’s “Opposites Attract”.

If these two songs don’t make you put a smile on your face, I don’t know what will.  Sound off in the comments with any other stellar bands I need to add to my playlist.  Stay tuned for my full concert recap and pictures of us in our homemade NKOTB t-shirts (with puff paint of course) next week!

SweetLeafJacqui’s SX Picks

By Danny on Mar 14     Filed In SXSW     Add a Comment

SXSW is so much more than just the time of year when guys in Austin wear more skinny jeans and hair gel than girls.  It’s an incredible festival that helps jump start careers in the entertainment business.

As a girl who has two homeslices trying to make it big in both music, love ya Miss Amy D, and movies,  Mr. Jeff Baker, I really appreciate how important this festival is to the lucky participants.

Now who do I want to see?  Some new and some old.  While perusing  the SX website I stumbled across  Allie Moss:

Her sweet voice just makes me want to sip a cappuccino and tap my  foot.  But when I’m ready for some energy, you will be able to find me at Matt & Kim.

Until I find better live performers, or they slap me with a restraining order, I will not miss a show in Austin.  I am also super psyched to see Questlove and everything else at the Rumbler Lounge, as they know how to throw a serious par-tea!

Now when it comes to fuel for the festivities, I will leave you with three suggestions.  Tacos, tacos, tacos.  Grab a breakfast taco from Taco Deli or another local hotspot for some protein in the morning.  For a refreshing lunch, check out Wahoo’s for a seafood taco, and for dinner I recommend you hit up Torchy’s.  All of their tacos are delicious, especially if washed down with a Mint & Honey.
