Have you ever wondered into a random grocery or convenient store on vacation looking for a little something-something and low and behold amongst the exotic products of your getaway location you find a tasty reminder of home? And even though it’s fun to try new things, the thought of a sip or bite of something familiar is too tempting to resist? I love it when surprises like that happen. It’s almost an excuse for me to get both—a double treat.

When I got the note below from a fan on vacation, it reminded me of adventures in faraway places and it made me smile. Partly because I was happy to hear Sweet Leaf was found in Hawaii by a Texas fan and secondly because there’s nothing like a good vacation. Thanks Stephanie for picking up Granny in Oahu and for sharing the love!

“They had Sweet Leaf green tea in Hawaii – now I can live here! Mint & honey green tea is my absolute fav. Found it at a great surf shop on the north shore of Oahu in Haleiwa. Made my day!! Thanks for making a great product!! —Stephanie M., Texas City, TX

Do you think you can handle that much homemade goodness? Uh, yeah. Who couldn’t right?

Well, now you can WIN it! In fact, 12 people from all over the country will win a year’s supply of tea by entering the Sweet Leaf Sweet Spot contest.

What’s a Sweet Leaf Sweet Spot?

Basically, wherever you’re chilling with a Sweet Leaf Tea. And from what I hear, many of you take a bottle of tea with you wherever you go. Camping, boating, beaching, lounging, dancing, biking, gaming, relaxing, running, bbq-ing, and the -ings go on and on. Which means the photo opportunities also go on and on. (Hint, hint.)

So, here’s how it works.

Grab a tea. Take a picture. Upload it here.

OR

Grab a tea. Take a picture. Tweet it up using the #sweetleafsweetspot hashtag and the hashtag of your state #TX (or #CA or #FL, etc.).

Oh, and be sure to enter by the date listed in your region.

Here’s where it gets EXTRA sweet.

Once you submit your photo, you will receive a message back from us with a link to your picture. Send your link out to friends and get votes. The two people who get the most votes will win a VIP trip to either Lollapalooza or Austin City Limits that includes 2 VIP tickets, airfare and accommodations!!! Woo-hoo.

That’s right! You can get in on this action. Only VIP style.

So the past three days we’ve been talking about all of the normal activities that take place during the 4th of July—fireworks, parades and concerts. But sometimes it’s fun to skip the normal. After all, we at Sweet Leaf skip convention with our tea, why not make Independence unique as well? Fireworks are great, and don’t get me started on how much I love concerts, but how do you know there’s not another, cooler, and stranger tradition waiting for you to discover? Therefore, below I compiled a short list of some of the cool, strange and all-out-crazy events taking place for the 4th.

29th Annual Chowder Fest, Boston, MA

4th of July is about celebrating America, and what better way than to take part in its culture and customs, particularly food? Barbecue’s great, but there are a lot of other types of food that are just as American.  Boston gets it. That’s why it’s hosting its 29th Annual Chowder Fest on the Plaza of Boston’s City Hall, as part of its three-day Boston Harbor Fest.  Eight restaurants from around Boston will be serving their very best chowder and competing for the tasters’ votes for the best. Chowder Fest takes place on June 5 from 11am to 6pm, so go eat some chowder!

Liberty Run 4 Mile, Denver, CO

As the man who was Born in the USA, Bruce Springsteen, said, “baby, we were born to run.” Denver took these words to heart and created the Liberty Run 4 Mile. Starting at 8:30am, adults and kids alike will be running 4 miles through Denver in their most patriotic outfits and enjoying the July 4th morning air. So start your Independence Day off right and with a good run. As a plus, you can feel less guilty about stuffing your face with barbecue (or chowder if you want to go to Boston) later on.

Apple Pie 4th of July, San Diego, CA

There’s nothing more American than apple pie, except perhaps U.S. aircraft carriers. If only there was a way to combine these two. Oh, what’s that, San Diego? You already did that? Good work! Yes, this Sunday, San Diego’s own USS Midway, a retired aircraft carrier that has been turned into a museum, is hosting the Apple Pie 4th of July. In addition to flight simulators and a concert with San Diego band N.R.G., the ship will be hosting an apple pie eating contest.  Now that’s what I call a July 4th celebration! Unfortunately, this event is already sold out, so if you’re in the area and wanted to partake in some nautical dining, you might have to try again next year.

Underwater Bike Racing (photo courtesy of Discovery Diving Co.)

Discovery Diving Underwater Bike Race, Beaufort, NC

Yes, you read that correctly, and no, that title wasn’t invented using Mad Libs. In fact, Discovery Diving in Beaufort, North Carolina is holding its annual underwater bike race to support the Children’s Miles of Hope. If you are the adventurous type and live near Beaufort, bring your bike and race underwater. You’re going to need more than American pride to make it through this race. Competitors use diving gear but are not allowed to use any sort of motor to propel their bike. Only human power. If you take part in this event, you’ll not only feel rewarded knowing that you’re contributing to cancer research, but you also get to tell people that you were in a underwater freaking bike race. I mean, seriously, how can anyone top that?

Anyone know any other interesting, strange or ridiculous 4th of July events taking place on Sunday?

Hello and welcome to the first post from one of Sweet Leaf’s newest (and possibly now your favorite) blogger: me, Harrison! I’m going to be a marketing intern with Sweet Leaf Tea over the summer, and let me tell you, this job rocks.

Like many of you, I have been a fan of Sweet Leaf for a very long time. When you are a native of Austin like I am, it’s sort of hard to avoid. In one form or another, Sweet Leaf is associated with all of my favorite Austin places and events—from The Hideout to Freebirds, and from ACL Fest to South By Southwest. It seemed like Sweet Leaf knew where I was going to hang out and quickly left some bottles or created their own event there before I arrived. In no time at all, Sweet Leaf had established itself to me as a part of Austin that was as important and fun as the Alamo Drafthouse or Zilker Park.

When I left Austin to attend school at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas (granted, not too far from Austin, but still wildly different), I took Sweet Leaf Tea with me to serve as a constant reminder of the city I love so much. At any one time, I had in my dorm fridge a half gallon bottle of Original and a half gallon bottle of Mint & Honey, ready to be consumed after a long day of classes or during a long night of studying.

In Between Two Bottles

Me blending in

Needless to say, when I discovered that Sweet Leaf was looking for interns for the summer, I quickly jumped on the opportunity, and it is here at the Sweet Leaf Tea Headquarters on South Congress that I find myself today. It’s only my second day on the job, but I can already tell it’s going to be an awesome experience. Everyone is crazy nice and welcoming, and the atmosphere is as cool and laid back as you would imagine. Plus dogs and unlimited free tea only help.

I still have a lot to learn about this company and a lot to explore, and I plan on sharing these endeavors in the near future. We can learn about the behind-the-scenes of Sweet Leaf together!

Well, seeing as how I’m probably going to be writing several more blog posts in the future, maybe I should come up with a good farewell catchphrase to use. Edward R. Murrow did it, Ryan Seacrest does it. Even Howie Mandel does that stupid salute thing. Why not me? Let’s see, how about… “Have a sweet day!” God that’s awful. Okay maybe, “Keep watching the skies!” No, that’s been taken. Plus it makes no sense in this context. Well I’ll keep thinking of ideas. Until later!

Hey ya’ll!  My name is Sarah, and just like Sweet Leaf Tea, I was born and raised in Texas.  I grew up in Houston, not far from Sweet Leaf Tea’s birthplace of Beaumont.  Austin became my home in 2007 when I started college at The University of Texas (hook ‘em!).  I immediately fell in love with this city.  Austin has a character that no other place can rival, and Sweet Leaf epitomizes that uniqueness.

Austin has inspired me to explore my creative side, and this internship has provided me with the perfect outlet.  As Sweet Leaf interns, we are encouraged to be innovative and expressive by posting on this blog and producing videos for Sweet Leaf TV.

Living in such an active city has also pushed me physically to places I never thought I could reach.  Whether I am running Town Lake, kayaking, or swimming at Barton Springs…this city is an epicenter for physical activities.  I love that Sweet Leaf Tea is all natural, and the perfect compliment for this lifestyle.

The laid back atmosphere, the cute dogs, and the unending amounts of tea are wonderful perks to working at Sweet Leaf Tea, but not what keeps me coming back everyday.  I feel lucky to be working with a product that I truly enjoy; for a company that appreciates the Austin community, the environment, and a little originality; with amazing people; in a city that I love.
