To get this holiday kicked off right, we’re doing our own sweet version of the 12 days of Christmas. In the past I wrote about how my family writes a new song every year based on the food “theme”. Word around my mom’s house is Italian is in the lead. BUT, until the noodles start boiling and the lyrics are set, I thought I would warm-up by writing a little ditty for Sweet Leaf Tea.

The best part about this sing-a-long is that each day presents a new opportunity for you to win. That’s 12 days to score a present for yourself. All you have to do is get in the holiday spirit and play along. So, here goes.

On this first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…

a present from Granny.

Have you ever gotten one of those special gifts from your Granny that just made you chuckle?

Well, the person that makes us chuckle with their story will win a prize. We’ll announce a winner each day so leave us a note in the comment section to kick it off. Check back tomorrow to see who won and enter to win another day.

Fa, la, la, la, la, la la la la laaaaaaa!

Here at Sweet Leaf we got this special note the other day and couldn’t resist sharing it:

Hello and greetings to you all,

I am a Grandma and I just had to stop for a moment to let you know about this particular customer and my story and to let you know that I just love your bottles!

I am a severe asthmatic and I don’t get out to stores as often as I would like, so I haven’t had a chance to see your many fine products until one day I did visit my Ice Mountain website to put in my monthly order for water and much to my surprise I saw two (2) of your products listed under items that they could deliver to my home. One was for your Sweet Leaf Tea and the other was for your delicious Sweet Leaf Lemonade.

I must tell you, first of all, that I am on a very limited income and although your items are a bit out-priced for me, a one-time treat was needed for my grandkids. I thought it would be cute for the grandkids, when they came over and opened up Grandma’s ice-box for a treat, that they would get a surprise to see a “Sweet” Grandma on a label of a bottle of their favorite summertime drink . . . Lemonade!  This way, if I wasn’t there at the moment when they wanted something to drink, they would think of me…one of those special moments, you know?

Well, I gave in and purchased a 12 pack of the Lemonade and a 12 pack of the Sweet Tea. (The Sweet Tea Ice Tea was suppose to be just for we grown-ups.) The grandkids are still raving about that Sweet Leaf Lemonade! Their mom and dad each tried one of the Sweet Leaf Teas and were simply amazed at the good taste of the tea.

But I must tell you that some of the children not only wanted to taste the Sweet Leaf Lemonade, but because it was so good they also wanted to see how the taste of the Sweet Leaf Tea was and being a Grandma who loves her grandkids…how could I say no? I was really quite surprised that the children enjoyed the flavor and taste of the tea too!

So, before I say bye-bye for now, this Grandma’s granny-ism would be…“If it’s good, don’t change a thing”…keep the organics going and that wonderful quality will always speak for itself.

Grandma Barb

Grandma Barb, thanks for the Grannyism and sweet, sweet note. You made our Granny blush!

Word up and Happy Friday to you all! It occurred to me that maybe some of y’all are like me and are procrastinators when it comes to figuring out what you’re going to do for Halloween weekend this year. If that’s the case and you live in or around the Austin TX area, I’ve got a cool list of things that I plan on doing and thought maybe you’d dig too! Have your own agenda this weekend? Post it in our comments section! We don’t care where you live, just tell us what you have going on!

Friday 10/29

Personally, I am laying low tonight, at least that’s my plan. There is so much going on Saturday that I can’t possibly handle Friday too, but if you are looking for something fun to do, check out the Do512 page. There are so many events going on that you’ll have to come up with 3 different costumes just so all of your peeps won’t catch you wearing the same thing out Friday-Sunday! Below you’ll see the costume I’ve chosen for today. Yup, I am the only one here at Sweet Leaf Tea dressed up today. That’s alright. It wouldn’t be Halloween if I didn’t rock some crazy outfit! Still looking for costume ideas? @SweetLeafCharla wrote a cool post last year where she shared some good ideas. Consult and get creative!

Scary monkey recpetionist, at your service!Saturday 10/30

Saturday 10/30

There is an INSANE amount of stuff going on this Saturday in and around town. Even the boot camp that I do, Fitness Unleashed is planning to have a costumed workout tomorrow morning. I won’t be there, but I’m sure it’ll be entertaining! Here’s a look at what I have coming up, but if it’s not your bottle of tea, don’t sweat it. Use that link I shared above for Do512 and check out what else is going on.

Tour de Fat The awesome folks at New Belgium throw an annual party dedicated to all things bicycle, sustainability and BEER! It starts this Saturday at Fiesta Gardens at 10:00AM for a COSTUME-FILLED parade and then the shenanigans begin! Roll on up, dress crazy, act wacky, but always, drink responsibly. It’ll be early yet!

Longhorn Game If you know me then you know that football is not my shtick but since I live in a burnt orange-crazed town, I think it’s only fair to mention that there is a game at 6PM against the Baylor Bears. Go get your tailgate on with some @TitosVodka and a touch of Granny, and watch some Horns throw down. Plus, you football fanatics will keep people off the streets for those of us out on bikes in costume.

Back to my reality…

Zombie Ball This party will be so freakin’ ridiculously off the chain that if I can’t find the time to use my tickets with all of the other fun stuff I have on my dance card, I’ll cry. Yes, really. It’s supposed to be THAT cool of a party. These partying zombies even combined their efforts with the Austin Bike Zoo to offer everyone a parade-type ride from the Red Scoot Inn to the Seaholm with all of the other zombies. MOREEEE BRAINSSSSSSSSSS!!

Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9) These guys are amazing live and are playing both Friday night and Saturday night at Stubb’s. Tickets are sold out but if you have the chance to see them, DO IT!

Did you go to STS9 and decide that you needed a little more? Good, head on over to The Parish. You will not be disappointed by what you see and hear. I am a HUGE fan of aural delights and Saturday night in Austin will be filled with them. Spooky, sultry, bass-filled and ELECTRONIC!

Yes, this was a real sign here in Austin a while back.

Yes, this was a real sign here in Austin a while back. Those pesky hackers!

We are dying to know where you plan on spending the weekend. Holla!!

ACL never disappoints! Another year, another baller festival.

Like every year, we saw some killer bands, had delish food and drank  A TON of Sweet Leaf Tea! In the style of High Fidelity, here are the standout Top 5 moments that made this one extra special:

Right from the start, people were so receptive of our picture frame!

1. SLT FANS!

We knew how great the tea was, but it was so sweet seeing how many of y’all love it too! Turns out, sweet leaf fans are just as sweet as our tea (aww shucks!).

We made this polaroid frame to capture the goodness of the festival, and these ladies jumped right in it! The hashtags on the bottom are for our Sweet Leaf Sweet Spot promo- fans tweet a pic from the festival with those tags and can win this Epiphone geetar!

This arts-and-crafts project was ours from start to finish, so it was nice to see you guys enjoying it.

2. BEAR RIDING

We heard The Flaming Lips were really good live, but we were not prepared for what we saw: Wayne Coyne, lead singer, rode a bear. Yup, a bear.

Ok, more like a dude in a bear costume, but it was still really amusing. That dude is tall, so was the bear/person. We were impressed. I mean… its a bear.

3. FOOD: OLIVIA’S FRIED CHICKEN

We’ve written a lot about our fave places in ATX to grab some grub, but this one was new, at least for me (Aviva). This chicken was AH-MAY-ZING! Perfectly crunchy on the outside, juicy and moist on the inside… all that chicken should be. I heard they serve it room temp in the restaurant too, which sounds like the pinnacle of comfort food.

Thanks for keeping me from starving, Olivia (whoever you may be) and bonus points for being soooooo grood (great + good).

4. TATS IN SPECIAL PLACES

Contest for SweetLeafTea on Twitpic

Found this via @JoeMcCall1 on Twitter

We spent around an hour every day passing out SLT tattoos to lucky fans. Most folks just wanted a nice guitar, classically displayed on their arm. A few, however, got super creative, like this gent on the right. I’m not sure we actually did this for him, but you gotta admire the dedication.

Also topping the list of most creative places: the lower leg, which saw a huge resurgence on Sunday, and the neck. At ACL, people go big on their tats.

5. OUR FAVE CONCERTS

Alright, since it is all about the music, we thought we’d each share our favorite show from the weekend:

Aviva: MUSE. I was looking forward to it coming in to the weekend, and these guys did NOT disappoint. I don’t know what makes their concerts so incredible, but this is the second I’ve been to and it was really impressive. There’s something about the energy of the show and the music, plus of course the great memories of seeing them when I was a wee high schooler and even more clueless about music than I am now.

Ty: I was tied between a few, but I guess I’ll have to say Deadmau5. Not even my favorite band there but damn that was a cool show. I’m just positive he was having more fun than anyone in the world during that moment. Atop his glowing cube, wearing a badass hat, Deadmau5 was SWEEEETT.

Sarah: Like Ty, I am also tied between a few. Deadmau5 was for sure one of my faves, BUT Vampire Weekend came out ahead for me because you can never beat a band that you are able to belt at the top of your lungs along to. I loved being with all the other fans, enjoying their music and singing along to all the kick ass songs they have.

So that’s our weekend, in a nutshell. Of course, there’s a lot of greatness that didn’t make it into the top 5 list, so feel free to let us know what we missed! In the meantime, here are some of our sweetest pics from the weekend to help fill in the gaps.

I’ve been designing jewelry for a little over 9 years and wanted to do something ‘good’ for the planet in the form of jewelry – ‘Go Green’.  I thought hmm, there are so many cool things that can be ‘Up-cycled’ to give them new life and keep them out of land fills.  The most colorful item I found to ‘up-cycle’ from O.P.T.  (other people’s trash) is aluminum cans.  They’re colorful and shiny and people love to guess what cans I use in my jewelry designs.

So, the question was, “Where can I get a lot of cans, in tons of pretty colors, without picking through the neighbors trash?”  Well, word of mouth worked best, and before I knew it, I had an artist’s palette of cans in so many cool colors and designs, from friends, family and neighbors.  Also, my hubby and I long distance bike ride, so we also pick up cool cans from the side of the road. Cleaning up American, one can at a time!

Then one day, a couple of weeks ago, I got my first Sweet Leaf Tea Can!  The owner of our local Pizza Shack restaurant saves the really cool cans for me.  When I started looking through the box of cans he set aside for me, I screamed with excitement over what I saw. (Yes, garbage is pretty exciting to me now).  Especially when I saw my first Sweet Leaf Tea can in the box!  Yep, I am a newbie to the product, but I LOVE it!!

So when I was cutting the can, I knew immediately that I wanted to put Granny Mimi in a picture frame. I even named the piece ‘Granny’s Portrait’ before I knew it really was the owner’s Granny. When I read that on the Sweet Leaf Tea website, I knew this was the perfect piece to add to my Jewels by Jazzy ‘Up-cycled’ Pop Can jewelry line.
