Let the Adventures Begin!!

Aloha all you
Sweet Leaf junkies!

I’m Kamie (pronounced like Jamie, but with a -K-) and I’m a new summer intern here at Sweet Leaf. As I am “the new chick” and I’m entering a world of very dedicated fans, please allow me to introduce myself.

I’m from Canadian…Texas that is. A cozy little town tucked in the corner of nowhere! Or more formally put, the Panhandle. As crazy isolated as it is, it truly does have a place in my heart, however, Austin is the place I call home. How did this happen? To tell you the truth I really have no idea. I kind of just woke up one morning, threw my clothes in the trunk of my car and here I am!

It’s funny to me that as exotic as Canadian isn’t, I still get pleasant reminders of it in this super eccentric city. When asked during my job interview why I chose to apply at Sweet Leaf, I couldn’t help but think of the first time I ever tried the product. For the record it was Sweet Leaf Original and the first sip took me straight back to being a little kid running around the swimming pool, reeking of Bull Frog sunscreen and lemon juiced hair, sippin’ down my moms sweetened sun tea! Who wouldn’t want a daily reminder of that!

Hey ya’ll!  My name is Sarah, and just like Sweet Leaf Tea, I was born and raised in Texas.  I grew up in Houston, not far from Sweet Leaf Tea’s birthplace of Beaumont.  Austin became my home in 2007 when I started college at The University of Texas (hook ‘em!).  I immediately fell in love with this city.  Austin has a character that no other place can rival, and Sweet Leaf epitomizes that uniqueness.

Austin has inspired me to explore my creative side, and this internship has provided me with the perfect outlet.  As Sweet Leaf interns, we are encouraged to be innovative and expressive by posting on this blog and producing videos for Sweet Leaf TV.

Living in such an active city has also pushed me physically to places I never thought I could reach.  Whether I am running Town Lake, kayaking, or swimming at Barton Springs…this city is an epicenter for physical activities.  I love that Sweet Leaf Tea is all natural, and the perfect compliment for this lifestyle.

The laid back atmosphere, the cute dogs, and the unending amounts of tea are wonderful perks to working at Sweet Leaf Tea, but not what keeps me coming back everyday.  I feel lucky to be working with a product that I truly enjoy; for a company that appreciates the Austin community, the environment, and a little originality; with amazing people; in a city that I love.

Close your eyes and make a wish….

Before blowing out thirty-freakin’-five candles….

On May 12th, I turned 35 years old. Normally this might not seem like much of a reason to blog, but when you work with folks that are barely 25 years old, it makes you consider your age a little more. (Ok, maybe this doesn’t happen to everyone but, I like to over-think my life.)

Looking back 17 years, I am pretty sure that my expectations of what life would be like in my 30’s is much different than my reality. I am married for now,  I have no children except for two 4-legged hairy ones that expect me to pet them and feed them daily, I have a “real” job, I own my home, and amazingly, I still have a life! That might be the biggest surprise of all. I go out and do stuff just as freely, if not more than when I was 17. My first rave was at 17-I just went to one 2 weeks ago, my hair is still colorful, only now the purple helps to cover the gray, and I might be more fit than I’ve ever been in my life!

My 1st rave was with Moby & The Prodigy 1993

Back in the day my parents used to go to really cool concerts while I got stuck with a baby sitter, (The Police & Frank Zappa to name a couple) but just stopped abruptly after a while because they said they didn’t like how arrogant Sting was on stage (Synchronicity Tour 1984), but I think it was really that they all of a sudden felt “too old” to be at a live show. (Let’s note that in 1984 my folks were only 29 & 30!) On the contrary, I  feel like my interests have stayed the same over the years. I still love music and going to live shows, I still love being sassy and loud,  and I love surrounding myself with lots of different, cool people. Something that is definitely different between 17 and 35, besides the fact that I now wear glasses daily instead of just when I drive, is the overall feeling of being comfortable in my own skin. I would have told you that I felt that way back then, but looking back, I was pretty unhappy. Always the life of the party, but still a sad/angry, pudgy punk-girl, that just wanted to be loved by people. I was far from being comfortable in my own skin. Ask someone from Plano East (class of 1993) about me and they will probably say that I seemed so sure about myself, comfortable, and self-aware, and don’t get me wrong, I love that I had people fooled, but let’s be honest,  deep down we all want to be accepted, no matter how weird, or different we might be. I think that once you get used to being in your 30’s, that being accepted and loved by everyone just isn’t as important as it felt back in the day. (I DO love to be loved!)

Another difference is that I really appreciate life and the world around me so much more than I did in my youth. I love to bike around Austin and the Hill Country, while marveling about how cool the view is and how lucky I am to live exactly where I want to live. Not a lot of people can say that at any age. If we took the time to be more appreciative (and trust me when I say I still have a long way to go on this…) of what’s around us, life might be a little easier to live. The grass is rarely greener,  but is sometimes speckled with flowers, cool animals or really funny people that enrich your life just by making you smile. Maybe that’s what growing up is all about. It’s not about paying bills, death and taxes like my parents taught me. It’s about LOVING YOUR life. We only get one and whether we live to 17, 35, 52, or 102 we need to just do what Grannyism #65 says, “Life’s a garden. DIG IT!”.

Am I sick and twisted because I honestly look forward to turning 40?!?! I can’t even imagine how freakin’ cool (and gray) I’ll be then!

Moms Rock!

Mother’s Day may have been Sunday but it’s never too late to tell your Mom, Granny, Great Aunt that raised you, etc. how much you love them and how much they rule!

My mom gave me life 35 years ago this week (5/12) and there have been days that I have cursed her for that first breath of air, but most days I think about how lucky I am to have her as my mom. She’s the coolest mom I’ve ever had (yes, and she’s the only one) and I’m blessed to have her in my life as my mom and one of my best friends.

Mom-Thank you for always being there to clean my wounds and blow on them when they’re burning from the alcohol you poured all over them, for baking me the most incredible chicken the day I left the hospital after my back surgery, (it’s still the best-tasting chicken I’ve had to date), and for listening to me cry and whine about my personal life. (Now and when I was a kiddo.) I’m glad that I’m your kid and that you’re my mom!

Please raise a bottle of your favorite Sweet Leaf Tea flavor, and toast that special lady in your life!

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” -Dr. Seuss, from The Lorax

Earth Day is Thursday, April 22, and we here at Sweet Leaf Tea want to celebrate with a contest that involves your help in creating a collection of ideas of how we can take care of Mother Earth!

Here’s how it works: Submit your ideas of how to take care of Mother Earth via the comments section of this blog post. The best responses will be those that capture the spirit of Earth Day in a creative and fun manner. We will pick one winner everyday begging on April 15 through April 22. Prizes include a Sweet Leaf Tea reusable shopping bag, VIP free tea coupon, lip balm and more! The best answer at the end of the week will also win a 6 pack of their favorite flavor of Sweet Leaf Tea!

We’re not allowed to participate (the ONLY downside to working for Granny!) but if I could post a pledge to help take care of Mother Earth it would go a little somethin’ like this…

I’ve been known to take some pretty long showers. It can be so warm in there under the running water, and I usually have some music blaring, causing me to sing at the top of my lungs. I have been trying to come up with an effective way to shorten my showers for some time now, but I just can’t discipline myself to do it consistently. But then I thought about it more and realized that in the morning there is only one other thing I love more than a long, hot shower, and that is a perfectly cooked, over easy egg. So, in order to focus on getting in and out of the shower as quickly as possible, I pledge to turn on the stove-top and crack an egg in the frying pan every morning before getting into the shower.  In order to enjoy the perfectly cooked egg, I’ll have to be sure to get out in time to flip it before it burns, thus drastically shortening my shower time and water consumption…..OR, maybe I’ll just invest in a low-flow shower head to cut down on my water usage. :) Either way I’ll be cutting down on my water waste and my water bill.

We encourage you to be creative and have fun with your responses, and we look forward to reading them all! If you need a little inspiration, check out Granny’s ideas at http://www.sweetleaftea.com/green.

Additional Rules: You must enter using the comments section on the SIP. Winners will be chosen from the comments section on a daily basis. Entries are only eligible for a prize on the day they are submitted. In other words, you must enter each day in order to be eligible for a prize on that day. Repeat entries are invalid.
