While you guys are working hard on your Valentines Day, Granny-inspired haiku’s, I thought I’d share a little video poem from one of our favorite Facebook fans, Kerry O’Brien. Anytime Kerry comments he puts it in the form of a poem/rap and we thought it’d be cool if he’d do a little number for our blog. Would you believe he agreed to for some Raspberry tea?! Easy yo!

ACL never disappoints! Another year, another baller festival.

Like every year, we saw some killer bands, had delish food and drank  A TON of Sweet Leaf Tea! In the style of High Fidelity, here are the standout Top 5 moments that made this one extra special:

Right from the start, people were so receptive of our picture frame!

1. SLT FANS!

We knew how great the tea was, but it was so sweet seeing how many of y’all love it too! Turns out, sweet leaf fans are just as sweet as our tea (aww shucks!).

We made this polaroid frame to capture the goodness of the festival, and these ladies jumped right in it! The hashtags on the bottom are for our Sweet Leaf Sweet Spot promo- fans tweet a pic from the festival with those tags and can win this Epiphone geetar!

This arts-and-crafts project was ours from start to finish, so it was nice to see you guys enjoying it.

2. BEAR RIDING

We heard The Flaming Lips were really good live, but we were not prepared for what we saw: Wayne Coyne, lead singer, rode a bear. Yup, a bear.

Ok, more like a dude in a bear costume, but it was still really amusing. That dude is tall, so was the bear/person. We were impressed. I mean… its a bear.

3. FOOD: OLIVIA’S FRIED CHICKEN

We’ve written a lot about our fave places in ATX to grab some grub, but this one was new, at least for me (Aviva). This chicken was AH-MAY-ZING! Perfectly crunchy on the outside, juicy and moist on the inside… all that chicken should be. I heard they serve it room temp in the restaurant too, which sounds like the pinnacle of comfort food.

Thanks for keeping me from starving, Olivia (whoever you may be) and bonus points for being soooooo grood (great + good).

4. TATS IN SPECIAL PLACES

Contest for SweetLeafTea on Twitpic

Found this via @JoeMcCall1 on Twitter

We spent around an hour every day passing out SLT tattoos to lucky fans. Most folks just wanted a nice guitar, classically displayed on their arm. A few, however, got super creative, like this gent on the right. I’m not sure we actually did this for him, but you gotta admire the dedication.

Also topping the list of most creative places: the lower leg, which saw a huge resurgence on Sunday, and the neck. At ACL, people go big on their tats.

5. OUR FAVE CONCERTS

Alright, since it is all about the music, we thought we’d each share our favorite show from the weekend:

Aviva: MUSE. I was looking forward to it coming in to the weekend, and these guys did NOT disappoint. I don’t know what makes their concerts so incredible, but this is the second I’ve been to and it was really impressive. There’s something about the energy of the show and the music, plus of course the great memories of seeing them when I was a wee high schooler and even more clueless about music than I am now.

Ty: I was tied between a few, but I guess I’ll have to say Deadmau5. Not even my favorite band there but damn that was a cool show. I’m just positive he was having more fun than anyone in the world during that moment. Atop his glowing cube, wearing a badass hat, Deadmau5 was SWEEEETT.

Sarah: Like Ty, I am also tied between a few. Deadmau5 was for sure one of my faves, BUT Vampire Weekend came out ahead for me because you can never beat a band that you are able to belt at the top of your lungs along to. I loved being with all the other fans, enjoying their music and singing along to all the kick ass songs they have.

So that’s our weekend, in a nutshell. Of course, there’s a lot of greatness that didn’t make it into the top 5 list, so feel free to let us know what we missed! In the meantime, here are some of our sweetest pics from the weekend to help fill in the gaps.

In recent years, I have made an annual trip the first week of August to the Davis Mountains and Big Bend area of Texas to spend time with some dear long time friends and attend an old fashioned Camp Meeting of 3,000 people from across Texas as well as a few other states.  In addition, this year my sister was joining me near the end of the trip to celebrate her upcoming “significant” birthday.  The thought of not having access to my favorite Sweet Leaf Tea, Mint and Honey, for eight days was not a pleasant one and I  did not want to pack the tea in my suitcase even though Southwest Airlines takes the best care of my bags (and they fly free).  I checked the Sweet Leaf Tea website for retail sites in Fort Davis, Alpine and Marfa but no luck. Since I was flying into Midland and renting a car for the drive, I checked the Midland area and found that the local HEB market carried Sweet Leaf Tea.  I called HEB and explained to the manager that I needed to “reserve” six half-gallons of Mint and Honey Sweet Leaf Tea for pick-up on August 5. The manager checked his stock and then called me back to say it would be waiting for me in Customer Service when I arrived.  Two days later,  I flew to Midland, drove to HEB, picked up my Mint and Honey plus some other supplies and then headed for the Davis Mountains where the Texas sky is bigger and more blue and the clouds are more white than any other part of the state. We drank Sweet Leaf Mint and Honey Tea in Midland, Monahans, Pecos, Balmorhea State Park (home of one of the neatest swimming holes in Texas), in Fort Davis, Marfa and Alpine.  We drank it in the car, at the hotel, in restaurants, on a cabin porch in a rocking chair, in a Camp Meeting cook shed, by the swimming pool, while watching the stars at night at the McDonald Observatory, driving through sand dunes, and even on horseback while on a trail ride.  When we shared it with friends, they always said “This is really great tea! What kind is it?”  And then we told them the Sweet Leaf Tea story. In the land of “Giant,” Sweet Leaf Mint and Honey is a giant of a tea.

Being the Consumer Services Manager for Sweet Leaf Tea is both fun and challenging. I go through all emails, phone calls and social media channels to gather consumer insight for our company. While it’s true that some of the “insight” are complaints, MOST of what I hear/read is positive and comes from a place of love. This brings me to the email below from a very passionate consumer, Heidi Zerbe.

The Zebers

Hello. I just wanted to thank you for not only making such an excellent product, but for creating a (what I consider) healthy addiction, considering the alternatives. Your Mint and Honey tea is my idea of heaven in a cup. Having recently gotten married, I have taken it upon myself to teach my husband his new role: late night Sheetz runs for your fabulous-ness. (It’s a word. Look it up.) I crave it like a pregger woman wants her Krispy Kremes–although I know that when we do decide to delve into the miracle of childbirth, my cravings for Mint and Honey tea will only increase…thus giving me reason to name our first born after you. (Just so you know, this will not be for some time, although I have to admit, it’s fun to tell the hubby I am just to watch the look on his face.) All this said…I love you. And although our local Sheetz convenience store is the only location I can find your tea, and they only carry maybe three flavors, I still want to thank you for your presence in my town. You rock pretty hardcore.
But I bet you already knew that.

Stevie Wonder at Jazz Fest 2008.

What do you think about the lineup for this year’s NOLA Jazz Festival? The good news is if you missed Pearl Jam at ACL last year, they’re headlining. And if you missed Lionel Richie at any point over the last 30 years you can see him too. Austin’s own Marcia Ball will be performing the first weeekend as well as Simon and Garfunkel, My Morning Jacket and The Black Crowes. (I was able to see The Black Crowes at Rothbury last summer and they’re awesome live.)

The second weekend offers much more for my taste with Richie Havens, Elvis Costello, Band of Horses, Old Crow Medicine Show, Gipsy Kings, the list goes on and on. Click here to see the complete line up.

Let us know if you like the list and if you’ll be making the trip to the birthplace of jazz to see it for yourself.

Festival dates-

Weekend 1: April 23-25
