How sweet it is, hometown Austin TX, as we get a chance to pair up Sweet Leaf Tea, an Austin favorite, with hot summer days soaking at Barton Springs, the crowning jewel of our fair city.
Join us this coming Thursday, August 11th, for the annual Council Cleans the Pool Day, hosted by The Friends of Barton Springs Pool, co-sponsored by Sweet Leaf Tea!
Who are the Friends of Barton Springs Pool? We are anyone who enjoys cool, clear spring waters, and takes a little time to keep the sparkle twinkling in this ecological jewel with our volunteer organization.
What are we going to do? We do the zen pushbrooming conga line, we do polish the shine where algae leaves slime, we do beautify the landscape, we soak in the pool while it’s closed to everyone else for cleaning (usually on the first Thursdays of each month), we have fun, we smile, we sweat, and we reward the sweet sweat of your labours with Sweet Leaf Tea and other sundry and delicious vittles provided by local businesses Thursday August 11th at our Council Cleans the Pool Day!
All are welcome!
We will be down at the pool all day from 8am till 6pm. 2 hour shifts available. Bring sun protection and clothes you don’t mind working/getting wet in. Please let us know what time you will be joining us so we can plan the tasks and refreshments accordingly.
To sign up, email us, service@friendsofbartonspringspool.org.
Deep sweet roots connect Barton Springs to the Austin Community and environment. Come join us for a little sweat and celebration of these roots, a sweet time, and some Sweet Leaf Tea!

By Danny on May 24 Filed In Activities, Events, Live Music 1 Comment
Hello fans of tea, music, and good times!
The Austin Chronicle is kicking off a music series they call Paper Cuts this coming Thursday showcasing an artist from a recent printing! I am super excited first off because Sweet Leaf Tea is sponsoring it and will be pouring the most refreshing stuff on the planet, but also because one of my top Austin bands are going to be playing…..
FOOT PATROL!
I first saw this band at Fun Fun Fun Fest in 2009 and they lit up the crowd with their high energy on stage coupled with their funkalicous sound. Check out their stuff below, and rsvp to attend this event! It’s gonna be a fun one.

Ashley’s SXSW Picks

This week, the social frenzy that is SXSW really gains momentum, as the music portion of the fest kicks off on the heels of film and interactive. Don’t get me wrong- it’s been fun up until now, but SX-music takes it to another level. Put on your party pants (skinny jeans if you want to fit in), call in sick (j/k), and get ready for a great week in Austin. Here are some of my picks:
Paste Party in Austin: 508 E 6th (Thurs, Fri)

For the eighth year in a row, Paste will host day parties during SXSW, bringing some of their favorite new artists (and a few veterans) to the stage. They’re showcasing some great bands, some familiar- Eisley, TV Torso, Sarah Jaffe, and Sondre Lerche, as well as some new bands that I’m definitely going to check out: The Kopecky Family Band and David Wax Museum. More info here.
Music By The Slice: Home Slice Pizza (Thurs, Fri, Sat)
Another event I hit up every year is “Music By The Slice” at Home Slice Pizza. I love this venue- not only because it’s my favorite pie in town, but also because it has a beautiful back patio/ beer garden, complete with a great outdoor stage.
One of my favorite SXSW encounters of all time was at Home Slice. I decided to scoot down there for lunch, and as I sat down outside to enjoy my slice and Mexican Coke, noticed that some guys were wheat pasting a mural on the wall across from where I was sitting.
I studied this stuff in art school, so was immediately interested. Upon closer inspection, I realized that the rogue artists were none other than Shepard Fairey and the Obey posse, major forces in visual culture. I’m pretty sure you’ve seen their work. I was psyched to stumble upon the actual people whose blogs and careers I had been following for years. And I got to offer them some Sweet Leaf Tea (Diet Peach was their fave)! Definitely a great SX memory. Maybe a repeat performance this year?
Dickies @ SXSW: Lustre Pearl (Thurs, Fri, Sat)
Lustre Pearl is one of my favorite local haunts, so I was thrilled to see that Fader and Dickies are putting on some great shows there. I’m psyched about The Givers, DeVotchKa, Cold War Kids, and Gayngs, to name a few, and love the idea of sitting outside under the trees, sipping on a (Sweet Leaf Tea) and hearing some great new music from those bands.
There’s certainly no lack of great music this week, just wish I could be in two places at once!
Get out there and have yourself a great time.
And a Sweet Leaf Tea, of course!
For the Love of Bacon

Ok, the real reason that I decided to go try Black Star Coop Tuesday night was to help my roommate celebrate his 36th year on this planet, but once I saw a tweet from my gal, @MajorPepper about whether or not I should try the place out, I knew it was meant to be.
@SweetLeafApril yep! good charcuterie too—if you’re lucky they might have house made HEAD CHEESE. oooh and you have to get the BACON TOFFEE.
Did she just say what I think she said?
Black Star Coop is the first of it’s kind in the United States: A brewpub cooperative. This means that the people who belong to the coop own and operate the establishment. These folks love craft beer and purposefully designed the menu around the flavor profiles of the beer that they make. To be fair to these guys, I don’t drink beer and think that before our company Memorial Day Boat Party in ’09 where I had a beer, it had been since about 1995. I just don’t dig it, but not only is my roommate a fan of good brew, I also have a very healthy respect for any food or beverage that was crafted with thought and love behind it. So it seemed like the perfect place to grab a birthday meal and adult bev.
Joel tried the Vulcan and the Double Dee, paired with a well-made and home-grilled-tasting burger and fries, while I went with the fish and chips. The french fries at this place are cut like steak fries but thinner, with a generous helping of sea salt, pepper and GARLIC. (View the link but just a warning, you’ll be over there for dinner TONIGHT once you check them out.) They turned out to be the best fries I’ve ever eaten. Hands. Down. Joel and I also shared a snack plate that contained escabeche, sweet pickled turnips (sounds weird, but was AWESOME!), St. Andre brie, some Gouda, house made chorizo and mustard. What a great way to start a meal and apparently it paired fabulously with both brews that Joel had too.
But April, how did you guys end the meal? What do YOU think!??! BACON TOFFEE! I dare you to tell me something better than seeing butter, sugar, and sexy, salty, thick, crumbles of bacon come together for a toffee party gone wild. DARE. YOU.
Well, it’s not going to happen because you can’t beat that combo. I’ve enjoyed Vosges’ bacon chocolate bar and this kicked it in the hopps.
Try it out for yourself and be sure to let us know what you thought about Black Star Coop. Got the skinny on a brewpub/gastropub in your area? Let us know, we travel for good food. OK, I travel for good food.
