Grannyism #60: Good Things Come to Those Who Wait
By Charla on May 29 Filed In Activities, Events, Grannyisms, Live Music, Sweet Contests Add a Comment
Patience is definitely a virtue (one that I personally have to work on daily). But, Granny was right in that good things do come to those who wait. As I mentioned before, there are more sweet tickets (including VIPs) coming your way for some of the best and most fun music festivals in the country (aka, ACL Fest, Lollapalooza and more!). Keep your eyes peeled and your ears perked for more chance to win. This is definitely going to be one sweet summer!
YESTERDAY’S WINNER: Congrats Diane Rithman!
How to spot a Tea-Slinger
By Charla on May 12 Filed In ACL, Activities, Live Music, Lollapalooza 1 Comment
All of this talk about Free Press Summer Fest, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits has me thinking non-stop about how much fun I have at music festivals with the tea’m. I’m not gonna lie, it’s hard work, but more than anything it’s a blast.
After all the festival chat during the day, I couldn’t help but laugh at myself when I went home and opened my t-shirt drawer. Now, I know I’m not the only Sweet Leaf’er that has a drawer like this. In fact, I’m sure there are a few here at HQ that have me beat. BUT, I’ve got a pretty good collection going and it’s growing at a clip that has some of my friends wondering if I own any t-shirts that don’t show Granny some love. All I know is, when I open my drawer to throw on a TEA-shirt, I get to relive the fun all over again!
Bring on festival season y’all, this tea slinger is ready.

@SWEETLEAFBARBER’S [ACL] Sweet Beats and Eats
By Elizabeth on Oct 4 Filed In ACL, Austin, Texas, Events, Food & Beverage, Live Music 1 Comment
Well hello again my fellow music lovers. Welcome to the music capital of the world, to enjoy another 3 days full of great music, great food, great drinks (hello, Tito’s Sweeto’s), and great people.
Flashback to last year’s “Austin Shitty Limits”…remember, this ummm, interesting dude….
We still rocked out to Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Ghostland, The Dead Weather, and Pearl Jam despite the giant shit storm. This year I am predicting clear sunny skies with temps in the mid-80s so this year is sure to top the last year’s like it always does. It is hard to give you my one band pick with so many amazing acts to choose from but let me say if there is one band you absolutely under-no-circumstances can’t miss, it is Matt and Kim. I made that huge, HUGE, mistake at Lollapalooza and I am not sure if I will ever forgive myself. I had to hear everyone rave about the show for the rest of the festival while I just hung my head with jealousy. I heard there was crowd-surfing booty dancing, lots of balloons, and impromptu covers like this one:
Don’t. Miss. This. Show.
Now on to the Eats. Honestly, you could get a great tasting of Austin restaurants right there at the food court on the festival grounds. Guero’s, Kerby Lane, Mighty Cone, P Terry’s, Olivia, just to name a few, will all be serving up tasty goodness. Torchy’s tacos are at the Festival too but I still recommend visiting their trailer on 1st street to get the full experience. My two favorite tacos are the Baja Shrimp and the fried avocado with refried beans. What makes the taco’s is their creamy chipotle and creamy avocado salsas. I could literally just eat the sauces with a spoon. It’s ridiculously good.
Megan’s [ACL] Sweet Beats & Eats!

Hi Sweet Leaf Friends! Innovation Manager Megan here. So for my A.C.L. pick, I think it’s only appropriate to recognize a very innovative artist set to hit the stage in Zilker this year: British/Sri Lankan rapper M.I.A.
If you don’t know M.I.A. well, you may recognize her as:
A) The female rapper whose did that song with the gun shots in Slumdog Millionaire. (a.k.a. “Paper Planes”)
B) That pregnant woman in the ladybug outfit rapping with Kanye, Lil Wayne, and Jay Z at the Grammy’s. Oh yes, she’s got Bjork-like fashion chutzpah.

Here’s what’s instore for you at her show: a danceable mix of hip-hop, electronic, various kinds of world music, rock, and whatever she happens to be into at the moment…AND a deep undercurrent of political messages focusing on war-torn communities and third-world issues. M.I.A. grew up during the Sri Lankan Civil War, which paid a heavy toll on her family and has influenced her as a musician, activist, and philanthropist. (Read more here.) Don’t miss her high-energy, thumping show at 8:30-9:30pm on Saturday at the AMD stage.
Sweet Eats!
After the show, head over to G’Raj Mahal, one of the many popular eateries in the Austin trailer movement that’s sweeping the city. Great Indian food, with a focus on organic and local sourcing, and open until 3am on Saturdays. Pop next door for a drink at Lustre Pearl, a funky old house turned bar with a great back yard. Make sure to take a few spins on the hula hoops!
