Name: Bess Montgomery (@SweetLeafBess for all you Twitter folks)

She’s quite an interesting broad- part English Springer Spaniel, part Labrador Retriever, part human. Just kidding about the human part- she only thinks she’s a person. Despite her sporting pedigree, she’s not at all into fetch or hunting. We adopted Bess from the Town Lake Animal Shelter here in Austin, where we first met her as “Frannie,” a docile, submissive waif of a dog. Three years later, she’s the zealous alpha female whose picture is on the back of our Raspberry Iced Tea.

Hours: Wednesday and Friday (she may sleep through the majority of the day, but it’s hard work looking so cute).

Job: office greeter, foot warmer, and shedder of black and white fur.

Favorite place: She loves to nap under my desk, curled up next to my warmth-radiating Mac tower.

Favorite flavor: Raspberry Iced Tea (at least until they come out with a bacon-flavored tea).
Not only is this flavor extremely tasty, but in my opinion, it’s the best label out there. One of our designers, Wes, did an outstanding job of illustrating Bess for this masterpiece. You can check out the Raspberry Iced Tea on the website.

Favorite thing to do at work: Dumpster diving. She’s developed quite a taste for the aluminum foil that goes around breakfast tacos, and discreetly goes through each wastebasket around the office. Bess also loves coming to work because of the other awesome SLT dogs (more on them later). We had to instate a 3-dog-a-day rule after the pack of dogs took to running laps around the entire office, chasing and stampeding. It was like a Dog Derby!

Here’s a picture of Bess and Happy en route to lunch one afternoon. One of her favorite places is the dog-friendly digs of Torchy’s Tacos at the South Austin Trailer Park Eatery. Go figure- it’s a taco and aluminum foil mecca!).

Most memorable moment: It’s hard to say- she’s been a fixture at the Sweet Leaf Tea office for years. She’s even taken part in our company retreats! Last spring, when the Food Network came to the office to film for our feature on the Food Network’s Unwrapped episode “Summer Snacks,” Bess was quite the camera-hog. She wouldn’t leave the film crew alone, resulting in several extremely close-up shots of Bess licking the camera lens (luckily they thought it was “cute” footage!).

I’ve been known to: be a bit of an alpha-female.

Best trick: She does a pretty good Chewbacca noise.

Favorite toy: The “squeaky squirrel” from the American Kennel Club.

Hobbies: On her days off, she likes to go to the dog park at Auditorium Shores on Lady Bird Lake, where she can be seen running laps around the field, desperately trying to lure other dogs to chase her. She also likes to ride around in the kayak, although she makes me do all of the paddling.

As 2009 is over and done with, who has New Years Resolutions? I heard something interesting on the radio the other day talking about NY Resolutions. It’s crazy, but you think about them as things you are going to do this upcoming (and now here) year. People always mention they are going to work out, or learn a new language. Even play the guitar.

What about all those bad habits we have? Why not break some bad habits? Why not just work out, but eat healthier! Why not just learn a new language, but broaden your own? What are some other bad habits you guys are looking to break this year? I know I’ve got a long list I’m hoping to become shorter by 2011.

Eating organic/healthier foods was a goal in 2009, and I’ll carry that right into 2010. Working out goes right in line with that of course. How about excuses? Nobody likes them, so let’s just do away with them altogether. I think that will make our lives more efficient AND meaningful. I’m done slacking off on things I’ve been telling myself I will or will not do. I think the key is having a plan; Being prepared for that yummy delicious double bacon cheeseburger, or that mouth watering slice of pizza only suited for the gods.. I can’t believe I live in California and I don’t speak Spanish. Not only am I going to start to learn the language, I’m also going to broaden my English vocabulary. Maybe I’ll work on my commitment issues as well. Haha. There are a bunch more, but I’d like to start getting a few more ideas from you guys to start the year off right.

What are your resolutions? Are you starting or dropping a habit? Both? Aside from Resolutions, what about predictions? What are you guys looking forward to this year?! I can’t wait to see the World Cup in 3D.. So, my fellow sweet consumers, tell Granny and I whats up for you in 2010!!

New Year

Hey there Sweet Leaf Fans,

Granny and I just got back from a trip to our bottling facility and wow, we sure are cooking up something special for you!  It was incredible to see all of the steps it takes to get those tiny tea leaves into a bottle that can be delivered to your local Sweet Leaf hot spot.  Besides watching the caps zip down to the bottles like they’re on a race track, my favorite part was meeting all of our brew masters at the plant.  Each person takes extra special care to make sure our tea is the best possible tea available.  After all, they Sweet Leaf fans too.  And if you really want to have some fun, ask them what their favorite flavors are, because it’s sure to end in a battle. On our last day, the facility was brewing my favorite, Peach Sweet Tea, and wow it was awesome.  The whole place smelled like fresh baked peach pie and a cup of hot brewed sweet tea.  In other words,  absolutely delicious.  Although you won’t be able to smell the fresh brewed tea, you can still see what I saw if you set your DVR to record Unwrapped on June 22nd at 8 p.m. central on the Food Network.  Just be sure to have an open bottle next to ya, because I can guarantee it will make you thirsty.

Until next time Sweet Leaf Fans, stay hydrated!

Jacqui
