Ask anyone who’s ever experienced SXSW and they’ll tell you stories of exhaustion, trials, and tribulations. It’s pure madness. Sometimes makes you wish you could just have the bands come play in your living room, just for you.

Listen here, people. We can (kinda) make that happen.

For the first time, our good amigos over at WOXY.com have a slew of bands coming through their studio the week of SXSW in Austin,Texas. They’re giving YOU and a friend the chance to sit in on one of their in-studio sessions. That’s right — you and a friend get to meet the band, enjoy some delicious Home Slice Pizza with some refreshing Sweet Leaf Tea, and stick around for the recording session in an über-intimate setting. Just you, the band, and the friendly WOXY.com folks.

How fracklin’ cool is that?

Choose from the following bands and set-times:

ENTER HERE for your chance to win, plus details.

Winners will be picked on Friday, March 12th, at 5PM CST.

In addition to these bands, WOXY.com will be broadcasting several other in-studio sessions, including You You’re Awesome, Via Audio, Twin Tigers, The Mynabirds, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, The Ruby Suns, Frightened Rabbit, Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore, Miles Kurosky (of Beulah), The Besnard Lakes, Bear in Heaven, Avi Buffalo, Surfer Blood, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson. Check out their site for more details!

Welcome to a new week! I hope the week (and weekend) went well for everyone, though it’s been a crazy one for sure. Here in central Texas we finally got some sunshine! After over a week of rain (and no biking…), that’s about all I can ask for. Social Cycling ATX ride, anyone?

So the highlight of this week for me was being able to crank the new Angels and Airwaves new album, titled Love. This was a SUPER big deal and long awaited for me. It’s been over two years since they’ve released any new music, so needless to say, us AVA fans were ready for this!

The album was scheduled to be released on Valentines day, but was released two days early for premium members on their website and on Fuel.tv. And the best part? It’s completely FREE! That’s right, $0. So if you’re in the mood for some great music, click HERE and give it a listen. This band very well could change your life as much as they’ve changed mine.

If you really dig ‘em, they’ll be touring the U.S. In April and March. Believe me, you don’t wanna miss one of these shows! (Think U2 mixed with punk rock)

And in other news, THE Gary Fisher will be in Austin the 26th and 27th! Friday night, he’ll be doing a Q and A session at Mellow Johnny’s bike shop, followed by a 9 A.M. ride Saturday morning. So if you’ve always wanted to hang out with the father of mountain biking, here’s your chance.

“Going out and riding every day… when will this be a prescribable item? We have a very powerful cure for what ails this world. It’s called a bicycle.” – Gary Fisher

Well said. This guy has it figured out!

I hope you got out there and enjoyed the weekend! Soaked up some vitamin D, some vitamin Tea (cheesy, I know), and “just keep livin’… l-i-v-i-n‘”…

Oh, Valentine’s Day…

Every year, it always seems that everyone generally leans one of two ways –
1) Get excited/stressed about putting together the perfect date and surprises for your significant other
2) Wallow in self-pity for being single, secretly resenting all your coupled friends

Fear not, singles. There’s plenty to do in Austin this weekend if you’re not tied down. Here are a few goings-on and ideas good enough for everyone, regardless of their stance on celebration of love day:

  • DANCE PARTY: If you’re in the mood to shake your toosh, here’s a couple options:
  • LOVERS OF FOOD: The folks over at Whole Foods Downtown are hosting a couple V-Day inspired events as well, with $5 draughts and $3 refills!
  • AUSTIN MARATHON: Bright and early on Sunday morning, thousands of runners will be traversing the streets of Austin. Although registration is over, it’s still always fun to cheer them on and check it out. Be prepared for various street closures until mid-day. More info here: http://www.youraustinmarathon.com/
  • MOVIE NIGHT IN: So maybe the weather HAS been less than inviting as of late. All the more reason to stay in, invite some friends over, and watch some flicks.  Our friends over at Austin Eavesdropper have put together a fairly comprehensive list of suggested films (not necessarily all chick flicks, but definitely love-inspired) for the occasion. Check it out!

So what are YOU doing for Valentine’s Day this weekend? Do tell…

Stevie Wonder at Jazz Fest 2008.

What do you think about the lineup for this year’s NOLA Jazz Festival? The good news is if you missed Pearl Jam at ACL last year, they’re headlining. And if you missed Lionel Richie at any point over the last 30 years you can see him too. Austin’s own Marcia Ball will be performing the first weeekend as well as Simon and Garfunkel, My Morning Jacket and The Black Crowes. (I was able to see The Black Crowes at Rothbury last summer and they’re awesome live.)

The second weekend offers much more for my taste with Richie Havens, Elvis Costello, Band of Horses, Old Crow Medicine Show, Gipsy Kings, the list goes on and on. Click here to see the complete line up.

Let us know if you like the list and if you’ll be making the trip to the birthplace of jazz to see it for yourself.

Festival dates-

Weekend 1: April 23-25

Weekend 2: April 29-May 2
