I’m a sucker for great music, delicious food and exciting new places. So, one can imagine my immense disappointment in not being able to attend this year’s Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago. After seeing this year’s line-up, an early bird ticket purchase for next year’s festival is happening.

It’s funny after seeing the line-up, I  realized how broad my musical taste really is. Even if it’s not something I would go out of my way to listen to I can still either appreciate it, dance to it or sing to it –so long as it’s not pop-country–, but even so, poke fun at how ridiculous and terrible I think it is. So in a nutshell  when there’s music in the air (good or bad), you know I’m having a good time!

The bands I would go out of my way to listen to at Lolla, however, jumped off the page and my heart got pretty sad knowing that I wouldn’t be there to enjoy them. Among the shows that will be sadly missed- Minus the Bear, The Strokes, Blues Traveler, The Black Keys, AFI, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and Spoon, which has been my summertime favorite this year.

So for those of you going to Lolla this year, enjoy! I’ll have to settle for ordering in a deep-dish pizza from Mangia’s with a side of Spoon and a box of tissues = ( I’ll see you one day Lolla, but until then I’ll have to party down with my ridiculous fun favorites at home.

This Thursday, we at Sweet Leaf gave Al from Tampa, Florida some very good news. Because he received the most votes for his picture he posted on our Sweet Leaf Sweet Spot Contest page, he received a VIP trip for two to Lollapalooza in Chicago on August 6-8, including airfare and accommodations. We had some fun telling him that he won. Check it out here.

Al's Winning Picture

Just like all of us here, Al is really looking forward to Lolla this year and wanted to share with everyone who he was most excited about seeing.

Foxy Shazam

Here’s Al:

The Lolla lineup is INSANE this year!

I’ve been in love with The Strokes since 2001 and this will be my first time seeing them live, so that’s very exciting. I’m a HUGE Arcade Fire fan. Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros are incredible. The Black Keys, MGMT, Against Me!, The xx, The Temper Trap, and Mumford and Sons all hoist big posters in my room as well. However, the band I’m most most most excited to see, due to the insane stories I’ve heard about them live and their completely unbelievably awesome new album, is Foxy Shazam. Every band/group/artist that’s going has my complete utmost respect and I’m just crazy excited to be going! As far as the food goes, I honestly have no idea what to expect, but I’m sure It’s going to be crazy good.
Congratulations, Al! If you want to be a winner like Al and get a VIP trip for two to ACL including airfare and accommodations, it’s not too late to take a pic and submit it at www.sweetleafsweetspot.com.

Not only do I get to go to the best music festival of the year, (yes, I prefer it over ACL), it takes place in my favorite city, Chicago.

Sweet Eats

First, let me share my love for Chicago.  The history and architecture of this city is so captivating.   There are so many things to do and see that just visiting for a weekend won’t do it justice.  My favorite activity being eating.  A restaurant that I always try to return to is Gene and Georgetti’s, which is one of Chicago’s oldest steakhouses. It’s been open since 1941.  Their steaks are juicy and they know what medium rare means. I like to accompany my meat with their “Garbage Salad.” [see below] Make sure to check out this restaurant located at 500 North Franklin Street.

Sweet Beats

During Lollapalooza, some of my top band picks include Frightened Rabbit, Black Keys, and The National.  I actually first discovered Frightened Rabbit in Austin during SXSW.  I watched them outside in 40 degree weather, so luckily this Scottish indie folk band kept me moving.   The Black Keys new album, Brothers, is incredible and the National also recently released a new album, High Violet. I have yet to check it out, but I look forward to seeing them live.

No matter where I’m eating or which band I’m seeing, Chicago and Lollapalooza will not let me down.  I’m just hoping that I won’t get drilled in the face with a Sweet Leaf Tea bottle while working our booth like I did two years ago.

I grew up in Northwest Indiana, so it’s slightly embarrassing that my first trip to Lollapalooza is as an out-of-state guest. But luckily, at Sweet Leaf Tea we believe in laugher, high-fives, and good music. With the first two under my belt, I’ve made it a personal goal to broaden my music knowledge. You can join me in my music education by checking out my – Lolla Song of the Day – on Twitter at @SweetLeafJacqui. I am so ecstatic to party in my homeland with my tea-mates!

Sweet B-b-b-b-beats
Our office is full of hipsters and music gurus who are excited to see bands like “Minus the Bear”, “Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros”, and “Mumford & Sons”. Not me. I’m not ashamed to say that band/artist that I am most looking forward to seeing is Lady Gaga. I’m not the biggest fan of her music; I actually think “Poker Face” is rather annoying. And after 2010, I predict she is going to fade into the deep pit of music has-beens. But, in the heart of 2010, she is untouchable. I’m excited for the costumes, her bizarre antics, and screaming fans acting like 16 year old girls. Who knows, I may even become one of them.

Sweet Eats
When it comes to food in the city, there is only one place on the top of my list of place to visit, Frontera Grill. @Rick_Bayless was actually the first celebrity I followed on Twitter. Yeah, that took the seriousness up a notch. I fell in love w/ Rick on Top Chef Masters. His laid back style and love for exotic flavors are right up my alley. His Mexican food makes Austin’s TexMex look like child’s play. Just thinking of his food is making my mouth water and my stomach say Om Nom Nom Nom.  If I can squeeze in a visit to Frontera Grill during my fun filled weekend, I will be the happiest woman alive. But otherwise you’ll just find me sipping on some Citrus Green and savoring a delicious piece of Lou Malnati’s in Chow Town and loving life in Sweet Home Chicago.

If there’s anything we love more than a delightful glass of homemade goodness, it’s music! So when compiling a list of the sweetest things to do this 4th of July, we knew concerts needed a section all their own. If you’re from a small, Texas town like myself, then you probably associate the 4th of July with small-town bands that cover old country classics like “Strawberry Wine” and “Friends in Low Places” while the locals cut the rug in their Sunday’s best. While those concerts have never failed to show me an exceptionally good time, I couldn’t help but wonder about some other sweet spots where my fellow Americans would be jammin’ out this 4th of July.

As it turns out, Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic is a pretty big deal here in Austin, Texas! And why wouldn’t it be with a line up like Randy Rogers, Kris Kristofferson, Billy Joe Shaver, Billy Bob Thorton & the BoxMasters and Willie Nelson himself? It seems that country music lovers have been gathering to this extravaganza since 1973, and this year will be no exception!

On the other side of the country, blues lovers will be gathering for the 23rd annual Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland, Oregon. This 5-day music festival (that begins July 2nd) is the LARGEST blues festival on the West coast, with a stellar line-up of more than 100 performances, featuring bands like Mingo Fishtrap, Austin’s own Porterdavis, Sultan’s of Slide and Commander Cody & The Lost Planet Airmen. Not only will blues fans get to jam out to great music during their holiday, but their hard earned dollars will also benefit Oregon Food Banks that work to eliminate hunger statewide!

For those celebrating July 4th in our nation’s capitol, there is the Concert from the West Lawn of the Capitol building. Performances at this venue will include Gladys Knight and Reba McEntire–two legends of their own genre! If you can’t make it to D.C. for this super sweet concert, no need to worry because you can catch it live in spectacular high-def on PBS!

These are just to name a few, and wherever it is that you decide to celebrate your 4th of July don’t forget to make music one of the main events!

Are there any other sweet, 4th of July concerts we should know about?
