#65: Life is a garden, dig it!

Hey, even if you get dirty, you’re still gonna have something tasty to show for it.

    Grannyism #14: Kill’em with kindness.

Because smiling really IS contagious! And, really, the only way to get through life is with a positive attitude!

37 The greatest statements are rarely shouted

My mom told me a long time ago, “Tell them about yourself and use words if you have to.”

Talk is cheap, but the way you act is fact. People will probably forget what you said and they may even forget what you did, but they won’t forget the way you made them feel, so you gotta be real.

Watching someone make a statement with their life carries more weight than any word ever could.

Plus, if you run around shouting all the time, you’re gonna drive everybody nuts.

#26: Find a nice gal and settle down

(such a grandmotherly thing to say!)

Grannyism #30 – Mind Your Own Beeswax.

Because not only have I always thought that is a funny saying, but because the meaning behind it is so true. Why must everyone always be all up in everyone elses “beeswax”?!?

  • Galia said: May 25th, 2011 11:27 am

My favorite is #15: Keep your chin up.

I’m unemployed, and that is what I am trying to do!

My 92 year old grandma (who was at my wedding last weekend!) likes to say, “I’m still kickin’ – just not quite as high!”

It means a lot to me – when we got engaged over a year ago she never thought she’d make it to the wedding. Not only did she make it but she looked GREAT! A true southern lady.

Why? :) Wouldn’t you like to know? :)

When my grandmother would say “THE EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM”, my grandfather would quickly reply with “Yeah, but the second rat gets the cheese”
I live day to day, waiting for people to use the early bird grannyism so I can come back with that reply. How awesome is that?

grannyism no. 15: keep your chin up

I have the old school (pre-’grannyism’) bottle cap on the dash in my car so that if I’m ever having a rough day out and about I will always have a little piece of inspiration to smile.

Grannyism #15: “Live in the now, remember the past, and think for the future.”

I will stick with Grannnyism #50 The best things in life are free.

Because if I won the tickets they would be free, and that would be the best thing to happen to me in a LONG while!!! Thanks.

#57 – SPEAK SOFTLY AND CARRY A BIG STICK

Now this one speaks volumes(no pun intended..well sort of). I remember growing up as a youngster that there were always large sticks in our yard. Whether they be used to play “stick fight”, a life lesson I was taught was always stand up for yourself! That big stick went a long way.

  • Jen Marshall said: May 25th, 2011 3:25 pm

#37 – The greatest statements are rarely shouted.

…or even spoken for that matter! Viva the hugs, handshakes, pats on the backs, thumbs ups, high fives and peace signs!

Is the only exception to yell ‘I love Sweet Leaf Tea’ from the mountain tops?

  • Kelly said: May 25th, 2011 4:21 pm

Always make sure you smile. Smiling not only makes you feel good, it makes you pretty, brings sunshine to others and may land you a man!

  • Jenni B. said: May 25th, 2011 4:23 pm

“Be good to yourself and others.” It’s what it all comes down to, isn’t it?

#72 Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

This past school year was my first in college and I think it’s been kind of hard on my mom not having me around. So as soon as I got this on the cap to a bottle of Half & Half, I took a picture and sent it to my mom.

Now every time my mom and I have a bottle of Sweet Leaf we take a picture of the Grannyisms to send to each other.

Sorry being overly lame and cheesy.

  • Sarah said: May 25th, 2011 4:27 pm

My favorite Grannyism: “Always look on the bright side of life.” #61! I have the cap secured to a file drawer on my office desk at work with a tiny magnet. It reminds me that, even if the work day is stressful, to always keep a positive attitude. It’s my perfect little desk decoration. :)

Grannyism #12: Always Wear Clean Underpants. Why? Do I really need to explain why?!

  • Kristin said: May 25th, 2011 4:30 pm

“Find a nice gal and settle down.”

…this is my favorite because despite adversities I may face in my life being gay, finding that one girl will make it all worth the pain I have experienced from my family since coming out. I think love will save us all.

Grannyism #55 WASH A DOG, COMB A DOG, STILL A DOG

Because this is applicable to all of my ex-boyfriends, a handful of previous friends and a past job or three.

Who’s happy where they are, right now? THIS WOMAN.

Pass me some tea and hand me a fan — Texas forever!

    #48 – “Money Can’t Buy Love”

Having grown up with a mother who always placed higher importance on my career path than showing affection and love, I’ve always stood by this Grannyism. And it’s more evident now than ever, as I’m in an incredibly wonderful, loving relationship, and my boyfriend is currently unemployed for the second time since we’ve been together. As long as we have each other though, it doesn’t matter. His love is priceless.

My favorite Grannyism: “If you can’t behave, be careful”

  • Hannah said: May 25th, 2011 4:37 pm

Today my grannyism was Bloom Where You Are Planted. As a soon-to-be-UT grad, I understand it as taking advantage of your strengths and leading with them to succeed. Sometimes we are thrust into unfamiliar situations too, and we just have to make the best of it.

  • Ashley Hilliard said: May 25th, 2011 4:37 pm

Grannyism # 1: “When I was your age, I could’ve drank you under the table.”

Yeah, she rules. And still can down a shot of straight liquor. Why is this awesome? Because a grandma that knows how to have a good time is the best kind of grandma! She will forever be fun :)

  • Jennifer A. said: May 25th, 2011 4:38 pm

My favorite Grannyism: “If you can’t behave, be careful”. It’s an original from my own grandma :)

“Take time to stop and smell the roses”

This grannyism isn’t numbered;, it was on a bottle top from a Peach flavored SLT that I bought a couple of years ago. I started working at Marble Slab a couple of months ago and it’s the first time I’ve started balancing school and work. It isn’t as bad as I’ve made it out to be, but the semester flew by. A little too fast for my taste. This grannyism keeps me in check when I want to rush through the last year of my “teens”, when life becomes all work and no play.

My fave is #12: Always wear clean underpants

Why you ask? Lets face it no one likes a stinky behind!

  • Justin said: May 25th, 2011 5:35 pm

I love so many of the Grannyisms! They always make me smile. My favorite ones are “If you didn’t know your age, how old would you be?”. “The less you own, the less that owns you”, and in the spirit of Free Press Summer Fest and Sweet Leaf Tea my number one would have to be “Dance as though no one is watching”!

I love expressing my joy and feeling great in my skin even if I look foolish doing it. Its so cool to watch that energy spread like liquid roots to the rest of the crowd.

    Dance! Dance! Dance!

  • Hillary Youngman said: May 25th, 2011 6:19 pm

My favorite grannyism: “too many cooks spoil the brew”. It reminds me that I can’t always control everything – sometimes I just need to sit back and relax (with a bottle of sweet leaf citrus green tea, hopefully) and let others be.

  • Elizabeth said: May 25th, 2011 7:09 pm

“Puppy love is real for puppies.”

If there’s anything that I have learned in the past year, it’s that truly loving someone means loving them through their faults even when you secretly want to smack them a mackerel.

  • Holls said: May 25th, 2011 7:28 pm

OMGoodness, I have been trying to post my grannyism all evening; I just purchased my first laptop and it keeps freezing up?? Anywhoo….

GRANNYISM +69 (sorry, don’t no where the asterisk is yet:)
TAKE TIME TO STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES

I adore this one for so many reasons….. It is a metaphor for so many scenarios of life :) You may not believe this, but in the past 14 days I have experienced more unexpected tradgedy than any human should. With that said, this is what #69 means to me….

When you come upon something new, someone from your past, a new friend, or a perfect blue sky… That is your opportunity to take it all in; the “what, where, how and why” of the experience. It only takes a few seconds….appreciate every one of them. Nothing and no one lasts forever, so please take time to “Stop and Smell the Roses” in your life. You will feel so much better…

Thank you grannyism for reminding of that these past couple of weeks… not to mention the refreshing drink I have everytime !

Grannyism #64: ALL THINGS GROW WITH LOVE

True to the story I’ve read a thousand times on the side of every Sweet Leaf bottle or can that I’ve drunk- all things grow with love. You can have all the right fixin’s, ingredients, parts or pieces, but you won’t get far without love. Everything starts out as a seed of an idea that can only blossom once passion and hard work are introduced into the mix!

“The less you own- the less that owns you”

I believe this and remind myself of this constantly- why? Cause on hot Texas afternoons while watering the lawn..(a long, long time ago) my granny used to say things like these.. I miss her. I like that I once found this one while drinking some tea. Reminds me to stay grounded and lead a simple but loving life.

….” you are what you eat” ….

  • Anne L said: May 26th, 2011 11:18 am

my mother has ALWAYS said this, and now I know why: she talks from experience.

“never love a man more than he loves you, as it is then that you will lose love”

  • Anne L said: May 26th, 2011 11:20 am

…”my aunt used to always tell me this:

” never let your laundry hang out to dry for other other to see”

…..yes, it took a while for me to get it but, now she is on facebook commenting on EVERYTHING! ….hmm..some need to heed their own advise…wink..

  • Anne L said: May 26th, 2011 11:26 am

“it is better to have loved & lost than never to have loved at all”

-words I honestly live by, yes LIVE! otherwise you may only exist without really learning the what true love may be.

    “cleanliness is next to godliness”

    “you ARE what you Eat”

  • Anne L said: May 26th, 2011 11:40 am

    ….”never go to bed angry”…

unfortunately, this is what all women still take to heart and then our men just pass out, or fall asleep & say they would rather talk in the morning-so you sit there by yourself while the other just snores……words of wisdom that never really can be enacted…due to the male population…wink…

    Grannyism #68

Brush your teeth with sugar and your sweet soul with live forever.

Meaning if you surround yourself and engage in positive practices they will lead to a blameless heart.

Grannyism: “Sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes the bear eats you.”

It’s the circle of life, man. Eventually, everything goes back to nature, so why sweat the small stuff? Just enjoy life.
