Twitter is truly a remarkable thing/place/idea, ok so Twitter is a noun and I love it! I have met so many incredible people because of Twitter and as mushy and girlie as it sounds, it really fuels my need for socialization and togetherness. Enter @SethMazow. This alternative-energy loving, cutie writes a blog called “Year of the Pizza“. It chronicles his adventures of free pizza for a YEAR from one of my favorite pizza places in Austin, Home Slice.

Seth looks JUST like the little pizza chef girl!

I run into Seth all over Austin and most recently at  the Austin Bleet-up put on by the Austin Eavesdropper” herself, @TollyM. We chatted for a minute and then he suggested that he take me out for a pizza since I am one of his most loyal commenters. YESSSSSS! Trolling blogs DOES pay off kids! I told him that it was about time and that I’d love to make it happen.

We met up at Home Slice, mulled over the toppings, and after a bit of deliberation, he talked me out getting the “April Special” as it called around our office and into more toppings. I mean, if no one has to pay for them, why not? The only bummer of adding too many toppings is that it can cause your pizza to get soggy. Seth and I are both experienced pizza-makers, so making sure the pie was heavy but not soggy was easy-peasy.

I chose part of the April special: ricotta (Seth HATES ricotta), fresh mozzarella, artichoke hearts, meat balls, roasted red peppers, garlic and basil. His side had basil, garlic, green olives, roasted red peppers, and fried eggplant. If you know me, then you know that I am not a fan of eggplant. It’s fine in a sauce/curry, but most other ways it just takes on a very strange, sponge-like texture that I am NOT a fan of, so when I had a bite of his half, I was BLOWN away! I feel like the green olives and the eggplant made it too salty, but other than that, it was awesome! I might just remove the meat balls next time and get the eggplant instead on the April special. The eggplant even stayed crispy when I re-heated the pizza later on.

See, when you enjoy a free pizza with Seth, you also get to take any left-overs home with you. Does it get better than that?

You thought I was a vegetarian JD? No way man, I love me some bacon and all things MEAT-food! Thanks for the props, yo! I had a great time w/Seth that day for lunch. And I mean, can you go wrong with a pie from Home Slice?

Glad to see you got to enjoy Home Slice with Seth before he left town. Such a nice guy and his wife is a sweetheart. Also, I completely agree with you about eggplant on pizza. However, there is this place in Brooklyn that roasts it so all the water is removed and then sprinkles it on top of pizza and it gets crispy and delicious!

It makes me sad to see Seth and Erin leave but they will be back and we’ll be here w/a big-ass pie waiting for them!

I want to get to Brooklyn to try that crispy eggplant pie out, Jodi. You have such great taste in food AND the company you keep!
