Tasty Up Trailer Tour Recap

It’s not hard to get me out of the house to do stuff around town, because that’s how I roll. But if you want to make it really exciting, mix my 2 favorite things on THE PLANET together into one, FOOD and BIKES! When I heard about the Tasty Up Trailer Tour on Twitter (& on Facebook) I got all excited and sent a mass email out to all of my pedaling, foodie friends. We are lucky to live in a city that has a lot going for it on the culinary side of things, and that rings true for the plethora of food trailers in Austin too! We have so many trailers in this town that there were places on the list that I had never heard of. I felt a little embarrassed as I pride myself on this knowledge, but it’s better to eventually be in the-know than never, right?
The bike ride began at my house over off of East Riverside with my buddy April (no, I’m not speaking in third person, silly monkeys!) and we rolled on over to S. Lamar to meet up with our friend Whitney. We cruised uphill to La Boite to grab some extremely tantalizing croissants and our name tags. Upon arrival I found Tong (joined our MS 150 Tea’m this year) ready for some biking-trailer action and grabbed some bites. I indulged on 2 mini-chocolate croissants as did April, and Whitney had the almond croissant. If you’re reading this Victoria, ask your pastry chef to combine the 2 because that would be about as close as you can get to heaven while you’re alive. Seriously.
Next stop, the trio of trailers on S. Lamar that include Gourdoughs, Brevita and Odd Duck. I had the sampler basket at Gourdough’s (naughty & nice, slow burn, ODB, strawberry shortcake, flying pig), an iced vanilla latte at Brevita and then enjoyed a mini ham and cheese sammich, coffee-braised pork sammich (sloppy Joe, slop-sloppy Joe) and the most AMAZING soup I’ve ever eaten in my life. It was carrot with paprika and a swirl of creme fraiche on top. (It had a goaty-taste which I am normally not a fan of, but it mixed well with the other flavors.) That soup needs to be added to the menu as a permanent fixture STAT!
The next stop was at G’Raj Mahal where I had the tamatar, (spicy and tasty tomato soup) and a potato samosa. Tong indulged on some incredible tasting cardamom ice cream. YUM! We met some cool peeps over during the Gourdough’s stop, Annie and Fitz and found them again here! We hung with them and then all went over to East Side Kings (behind the Liberty Bar). What did I love over at ESK besides the great conversation and seeing Addie, Jackie Huba, Jaye Joseph and Adam Holzband? Fried beets!! Yes, I am known at my old job as the, Beet Queen. I LOVE THEM and this dish was good enough for me to ride over again and again for.
A huge THANK YOU to Jodi Bart of Tasty Touring fame and Addie Broyles (Austin 360 food blogging rock-star) for putting together such an incredible, community event this past Saturday! I can’t wait for the next one!!

I love your energy and enthusiasm, April, and am so glad we FINALLY met in person. Including twitter handles in the post is a good idea. By the way, Adam’s last name is Holzband (but his twitter is @adamholz).

It was so great to see you this weekend, we need to see more of each other! And those beet fries were so good they nearly killed me dead. Everything at East Side King was outstanding. I wish they’d have a full restaurant I could go to anytime.
Jodi! Thank you so much for the props lady. I was so freakin’ stoked to finally meet you and Adam in person. (And thanks for the name info, I’ve corrected it!)
Jaye! We never had much of a chance to get to know one another at the Food Whole, so let’s do this! We both love food (and beets!). I say a meeting (ok, a tasty LUNCH) of the minds needs to occur soon!
This was such a great event! Well planned and jam packed with people. Getting to experience it with you, April, was even better. People were totally fearless about coming up to us and just talking. Hence the new friends we met!
Also, got to try so much more food as we all shared! That soup was truly sensational, just like JEM!,and one of my favorites of the day.
Was a great time, shocking that my husband showed up at the end, but I think he was glad he did.
AND, I think I at least burned off most of what we ate by riding all day. Yeah!
