It’s no secret that I am not supposed to be eating something like a donut, especially a giant, decadent, dessert-sized donut. But when Craig told me about Gourdough’s Big Fat Donuts, I knew I would need to give them a try.

Gourdough’s is the fried, doughy love child of Paula Samford and Ryan Palmer, that was spawned in a cute airstream trailer on South Lamar across from Maudie’s. These creatively decadent gems are not made until you order them. Did I mention that they are served HOT!?!?!?!

Dylan and I tried the Flying Pig (bacon on top of a maple syrup-iced donut) and the Margaritaville (margarita flavored filling by way of fabulous margarita jelly and a fresh key lime icing). The bacon on the FP was crispy and of good quality and the maple syrup icing tastes better than any maple-topped donut out there. (Take THAT Shipleys!) It’s a bit much IMHO for a donut, but it’s meant to be over the top and had we been hung-over, I think it would have helped! The Margaritaville was a little too sweet for my taste but was still amazing. I am a fan of ANYTHING key-lime flavored and the margarita-flavored jelly was a nice touch. You could really taste the tequila in it. Dylan is a sugar-freak and loved it!

A little while after we were fighting our way through both of these, Ryan came out and brought us a Naughty & Nice. THIS was by far my favorite of all three! The Naughty & Nice is comprised of sugar and cinnamon. Simple, lightly-sweet and absolutely delectable. Truth be told, when I order a donut I usually go for chocolate covered, plain cake (yes really-again, not the biggest sugar junkie) or cinnamon-sugar. If you want a treat that won’t send you over the edge into a sugar-coma or insta-bloat, try the Naughty & Nice. Your taste buds and your gut will thank you later.

My fave, the Naughty & Nice.

Next time, I’m going for the Miss Shortcake. Can you pass up cream cheese icing and fresh cut strawberries? Dylan has decided to try the Blue Balls (blueberry filling w/blue icing) and the Sara’s Joy. (coconut flavored  filling w/fresh coconut & fudge icing.) I’ll let you know!

UPDATE: The Blue Balls & the Miss Shortcake are AH-MAZING! The BB were actually donut holes with blue icing and filled with blueberry sauce. Dylan was happy to see that they were donut holes as he said that was what he expected. I was totally surprised, in a good way! They were ridiculously sweet but the blueberry sauce cut the sweet with a touch of tang which was nice. I loved the presentation! As far as the Miss Shortcake, I don’t know how they did it, but the donut was light (like short cake), not greasy at all and very satisfying. The cream cheese icing was a little much for me, but all this means is that next time (oh yes, there will be a next time) I will ask for less. The fresh strawberries were meant to be on top of a sinfully delicious, short cake-like donut.

These guys care about your waistline  and use canola oil rather than hydrogenated oils, all of their fruits are fresh and the icing is all homemade! Trust me, it will make you feel a little less guilty.  Check them out and report back.

A huge thanks to Paula and Ryan for kindly sampling the Naughty & Nice to us during our 1st visit and the Blue Balls & Miss Shortcake on our 2nd visit. You guys rock!

Where’s your favorite place to get donuts from?
