Livin’ the Sweet Life by Emily Hoyle
My first day at the Sweet Leaf Iced Tea Company was a sweet one for sure. You know you’ve chosen the right internship when the first thing you receive is an ice tea and some free t-shirts. I got the grand tour and met all of the employees in the office as well as some of the friendly dogs that hang out there. Bayer the golden retriever is by far my favorite dog.
My first introduction to my responsibilities as an intern was making 75 press kits for Gigi. Throughout the next couple of days I organized all of the marketing materials down in the storage room and got to know the other interns. This summer we have an overwhelming majority of Dallas natives working as interns and I must say, it’s a great change of pace from the invasion of Houstonites and San Antonians to the ATX. Fortunately for our working relationships, none of our NBA basketball teams are in the playoffs anymore so the office can live in relative peace…I only mentioned the Mavs beating the Spurs once…okay maybe three times but who’s counting? We had an orientation meeting our first week that was really informative and helped me better understand the company and it’s humble beginnings using pillowcases as tea bags and crawfish pots for brew tanks.
The first event I worked as a marketing intern was the Blues on the Green event at Waterloo Park on Wednesday June 3rd. I got to interact with Sweet Leaf customers and listen to great blues music and eat some amazing Austin’s Pizza and Saltlick BBQ. I can’t wait for the next Blues on the Green on June 17th and this time we’ll bring more stickers because the “pass out 20 stickers and receive a free Sweet Leaf Frisbee” was a hit!
I also worked my first demo at Central Market and passed out samples of Sweet Leaf and explained the product alongside my fellow intern Justin. (Hey Justin-here’s your shout-out homey!) One of my favorite things so far about this internship is the interaction with the customers. It’s great seeing their enthusiasm for Sweet Leaf and their pride that we’re a local company that’s helping to keep Austin weird. I also found my favorite Grannyism as of yet: Smile – it makes people wonder what your up to.
My first two weeks at Sweet Leaf have been really fun and I’m excited to see how the summer progresses and what new responsibilities I can take on!

Emily Hoyle lovin her summer job!
